Tutoring in Math, Science, ACT, SAT, & ISEE
I’m a former Harvard-Westlake teacher (math and science) who has been prepping students for ACT math and science, SAT math, and academic courses in math and science for over 30 years. I also taught math and science classes at Marlborough, Brentwood (summer school science), Buckley, Windward (chemistry), and Mirman. Many of my students attend (or attended) schools in the greater LA area (Harvard-Westlake, Marlborough, and Marymount, to name only a few). However, since I tutor online, it doesn’t matter where you’re located. I’ve had students in Florida, New York, and as far away as London, Haifa and Dubai.
During each online tutoring session, I use a two-way whiteboard that is saved as a PDF after each session. Before the lesson, students or teachers may text or email me the material that needs to be covered, which gives me time to organize the lesson. All lessons are structured to be in sync with the method the teacher is using to teach the material.
The vast majority of my math and science students don’t actually “need” a tutor, but sometimes get behind because of illness, a heavy load of outside activities, such as sports or theater, or some foundational weakness that needs to be shored up. This is where I’m able to help.
I’m happy to say that my students have been successful in being accepted into the colleges of their choice, including Barnard, Berkeley, Boston College, Brown, Claremont McKenna, Chapman (Dodge College of Film), Colby, Colgate, Cornell, Duke, Emory, Georgetown, GWU, Harvard, Howard, U Indiana, U Iowa (Writers’ Workshop), Loyola Marymount, Michigan, Middlebury, U Missouri (Journalism), Notre Dame, Northwestern, NYU, Oberlin, Ohio State, Parsons, Penn, Reed, Pomona College, Rice, Santa Clara, St. Andrews, Savannah College of Art & Design, SMU, Stanford, Tulane, UC Davis, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSB, U Edinburgh, USC, U Richmond, U Miami, U Texas, Vassar, Villanova, Wake Forest, Washington University, Wesleyan, Wisconsin, and Yale.
If I can be of help, I’d love to hear from you, so feel free to contact me at any time.
Rick Nau
Here's what some of my students and their families have to say:
“Not only was I a student of Rick for almost a decade in my elementary and high school years, so were my siblings. I know I can speak for all of us when I say that Rick is not only a brilliant teacher, but is so incredibly patient and kind. He makes difficult subjects easy to understand and his communication skills couldn’t be better. I can’t recommend Rick enough. Even now, years later, as a practicing dentist, I’ve maintained a close relationship with him. He’s truly the best, and an amazing person!”
“Rick was instrumental in my success in honors biology and in sparking my interest in science. His wealth of experience and easygoing style made him a pleasure to work with and learn from.”
“Rick got me through high school and college math and science. I could not have done it without him and his patience!”
“Rick has been a fantastic tutor for my 10th grader. His grades have significantly improved since starting his lessons with Rick, both in chemistry and math. Rick’s approach and technique reinforce what he is learning at school and gives him new ways to think about problems and understand the material.”
“It has been such a positive experience having Rick work with both of my kids. They have gained confidence and a deeper understanding of the material, and we saw major improvements in both their scores on the SAT and the ACT. I would absolutely recommend Rick to any family.”
“Rick Nau has a wonderful ability to break down complex concepts in a way that is clear and easy to understand, making learning both engaging and effective. His patience and expertise helped our boys grasp challenging material and confidently apply it to achieve great results on their exams.”
“Our son is in the 9th grade. He is a good student, but we wanted to make sure he was really understanding the concepts they were teaching at school. We live in an area in the Midwest where there are no tutors. We were able to connect with Mr. Nau. He has been working with our son once a week for the past year, helping him in Honors Chemistry and Honors Algebra 2. He has done well in both courses and will be taking AP Chemistry and AP Precalculus next year.
For people of our generation (born in 1978), it is hard to work without books and worksheets, let alone over Zoom and from far away, so we were worried. But Mr. Nau has been great. We look forward to continuing to work with him throughout high school.”
